Selecting Paint: Hirshfield’s Color Call

Expert help on selecting interior paint colors.

Some people are born with a gift of knowing color and style. They sense instinctively what would look perfect in this space or that, what color would add a pop of visual interest, what neutrals work best in what lighting. Thankfully, for the rest of us who don’t have that innate knowledge, there’s help.

Hirshfield’s offers in-home color consulting, where a colorist comes to your home, sees your house’s layout and furniture and discusses your personal style and preferences for the space. The call lasts a little more than one hour. After the visit you’ll get a color plan mailed to you and a $75 merchandise certificate to use towards a Hirshfield’s purchase. The cost is $225, and color stylist Belinda Dietrich says that her clients tell her it is a valuable service and worth every penny.

Dietrich recommends that homeowners think about specific areas they want to focus on so that they can best use their time with the stylist effectively. They should spend some time beforehand visualizing the mood they want the space to imbue—cozy, energetic, luxurious or elegant.

The Process

The in-home color process begins with a phone call, allowing the colorist to gather information about the colors of the fixed components in the space and find out what colors homeowners love or hate.

“If they’re doing a remodel, I want them to have all of their samples available to review,” says Dietrich. “When I arrive, I take a tour and make notes about the colors that are staying and how I’ll insert new ones to look like it was planned, always focusing on the client’s preferences.” Dietrich then gathers colors and gets feedback from the client. “It can be quite the color frenzy!” says Dietrich. “Once I feel the colors are perfect, I’ll take the client on a tour, showing them where the colors will be and how they’ll look from space to space.” She also makes suggestions for new window treatments or wallpaper options and can later send samples to the client. After a review, the plan is pulled together on a color card, which is sent out with the merchandise certificate.

“I stay in close contact with my clients,” says Dietrich. “When they come in the store, they always take a moment to thank me for the work and help I gave them. They say it’s something they couldn’t have done on their own, they never would have thought of those colors.”

Hirshfield’s gives some of the best paint advice in Minnesota. “I feel that we provide a fresh perspective on what their spaces could be,” says Dietrich. “We see things that someone living in the space on a daily basis doesn’t see, using our training and color expertise to give them options they may not have thought of.”

“Working with colors all day, we see subtle nuances of color that most others don’t see,” explains Dietrich. “In the end that saves the customer money and stress, creating a beautiful space.”
