As we turn the corner of a new year with biting cold and heavy snowfalls here in the Upper Midwest, one way to warm up a bit is to discuss Greenery, the 2017 Pantone Color of the Year.

Pantone’s official announcement even mentioned spring as the inspiration: “Greenery is a fresh and zesty yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring when nature’s greens revive, restore and renew.”

It’s no surprise that Pantone picked a green tone. The Color Marketing Group picked Thrive as the North American Key Color 2017+, and we featured a green, Mother Nature 0746, as the Hirshfield’s Color of the Month for October.

The allure of green is the tie to nature and its feeling of rebirth and renewal. Pantone describes Greenery as “nature’s neutral, a versatile trans-seasonal shade that lends itself to many color combinations.”

Color Combinations

As usual, brands rushed to market with on-trend merchandise. The Atlanta Constitution included many of them in their collection of 15 Holiday Gift Ideas Inspired by Pantone’s Color of the Year.

Rave Reviews

After taking the radical step of choosing two colors of the year for 2016 — serenity and rose quartz (otherwise known as baby blue and light pink) — Pantone’s return to its roots received rave reviews:

  •  “At a time when it seems everybody is in need of some hope, the bright Greenery should help provide some.”
    — Time
  • Greenery‘s attributes seem like something to aspire to: a call back to nature, an appeal to unity, a reminder to take a deep breath.” — Chicago Tribune
  • “The seeds have been planted. It’ll grow on you.” — New York Times

Color Inspiration

“This is the color of hopefulness, and of our connection to nature,” said Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “It speaks to what we call the ‘re’ words: regenerate, refresh, revitalize, renew. Every spring we enter a new cycle and new shoots come from the ground. It is something life affirming to look forward to.”
