What’s “old” is new again in wallcoverings. New collections from York and Thibaut both draw inspiration from classic, old towns — York’s latest WILLIAMSBURG collection and Thibaut’s Bridgehampton. Both books display a timeless style and elegance, with contemporary colors and grace. Here’s a look at our favorite designs:
WILLIAMSBURG II by York Wallcoverings
York recently launched its second “Trend Meets Tradition” collection with WILLIAMSBURG, the licensing division of the not-for-profit Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Like York’s first WILLIAMSBURG collections, each of the 16 patterns in the new wallpaper book is inspired by an antique object, design, or motif found in Colonial Williamsburg’s archives.

Reflecting the colonial-era interest in patterns derived from Asian and particularly Chinese art and décor, the new collection includes several chinoiserie-inspired patterns, including Brazanga (above), and Chinese Peony (below).
Brazanga is a bold adaptation of a classic Indian chintz, named after Catherine of Braganza, queen of King Charles II of England, who brought Portuguese trade routes to the British East India Company, spurring fascination with such Asian goods. Chinese Peony is an interpretation of 1770s handpainted Chinese wallpaper that hung for many years in the Supper Room of the Governor’s Palace in Williamsburg, Virginia.

While the Asian-influenced prints tend to make a bold statement, the latest line also includes designs with more subtle nods to their colonial influence. Everard Damask and Albemarle Damask are intended to capture the look of vintage textiles by combining colonial patterns with hints of metallic or gilt coloring for an eye-catching but versatile wallcovering suitable for a range of décor styles.

Bridgehampton by Thibaut Design
Thibaut’s Bridgehampton is a collection of peppy and spirited traditional patterns inspired by the fashionable area in New York. Thibaut has incorporated upbeat and lively designs into this coordinated collection of wallpapers and fabrics.

The collection features crafty florals, textural paperweaves, a variation of the classic animal print, and graphic patterns in both large and small scales.

Waterford Floral is the versatile star of the Bridgehampton collection. In the top photo, its watercolor floral pattern covers both the wall and a Brentwood Chair with its soft, ikat-like effects. Below, it surrounds a divine breakfast nook with the ultimate spring color palette!

This serene bedroom features Basketry, a slightly textured wallpaper that adds warmth and dimension to any room. Available in five colorways.

Bold and contemporary, Panthera rounds out the Bridgehampton collection with an eye-catching take on a panther print that’s available in six colorways, as a wallpaper and a fabric.
