It’s that time of year again – the Mpls.St. Paul Magazine’s 2016 ASID Minnesota Showcase Home Tour is up and running. This year, the Minnesota Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers have chosen a 5,600 square foot, 1950s Edina rambler to redesign with their 22 person team of professional designers.
“This is our kind of dream home. It’s simpler living, more modernist, and more long-term. I felt like we could stay here when our kids are gone, because it’s not too much upkeep. This was our idea of a dream home, more modest living.” -Jeanne Anselmo, Homeowner
The theme of the home is “50 Shades of Greige” – the mix of gray and beige that everyone currently wants in their home. Using textured fabrics, repurposed antiques, and glamorous finishes, it’s quite the home to see. Paint used throughout the home is supplied by Benjamin Moore and available at Hirshfield’s.
Highlights:
Foyer, Living Room, and Stairs: Since this is the first thing a visitor will see when they walk in the door, the designers wanted to make a statement. The floor is custom-painted in a geometric pattern and metallic wallpaper graces the fifth wall (look up). Mission accomplished. Paint colors: CSP-225 Gallery Buff and OC-117 Simply
Designers: Jennifer Austin-McGrath and Angela Parker

Kitchen and Kitchen Nook/Hearth: ASID designers Bonnie Birnbaum and Diane Lumpkin describe the kitchen as “A fresh twist on traditional style.” Keep an eye out for the unique dual-level island used for sitting and as a worktop. Paint colors: HC-172 Revere Pewter and OC-117 Simply White
Dining Room: The dining room features more of a “rustic elegance” – achieved using neutral colors, and relaxed textures, weaves, fibers, and finishes. Revere Pewter makes an appearance again, elegantly highlighting the centerpiece of the room – the pekoe-finished trestle table.
Jeanne’s Office: Since this room was added as an expansion, the designers faced the extra challenge of blending it into the home. Jeanne wanted a space that she could use for both business and personal purposes, and the designers definitely delivered. Paint color: 1536 Northern Cliffs.
Designers: Christine Happel, Elsa Dean, and Shawna Morcos (ASID student) Ethan Allen
The Mudroom: The designers created a mudroom that fit with the family’s active and vibrant lifestyle. It’s easy to ignore the mudroom, but it’s a space that you’ll walk through every day. Fun fact: Mid-process, the design team was asked to incorporate a mechanical closet into their design. The end result is really something! Paint color: HC-172 Revere Pewter.
Designers: Teresa Antonneau and Peggy Augustine of Augustine Interiors
The Master Suite: “This suite is tranquil, but not dull. There is visual interest without shouting.” Designer Keri Olson
Sounds perfect. Paint colors: HC-172 Revere Pewter, CSP-195 Porcini, and OC-17 White Dove.
Designers: Kimberly Herrick and Keri Olson
Ali’s Suite: Designed with the twelve-year old girl in mind, the designers did a fantastic job of creating a space that will mature with her. Using metallics, animal print, and brass finishes, they’ve created a fun yet clean space. Paint color: 1472 Silver Chain, HC-169 Coventry Gray, and OC-117 Simple White.
Designers: Jennifer Horstman and Natalie Talley – The Sitting Room

Powder Rooms: Dealing with a small space and no natural light, designer Karen Soojan commissioned an artist to create a grisaille mural, which is a type of painting done with neutral colors and grays. “I believe it expands the space by giving depth of field to the walls,” says Soojian. The lower level powder room needed to function as a public space as it’s off the pool, and Karen created visual tension with the finishes, including a custom mural. Paint color is AC-34 Cape Hatteras Sand.
Boy’s Suite: When it comes to teenagers, privacy is key – designers David Heide, Michael Crull, and Elizabeth Mueller kept that in mind. The Boys’ Suite consists of: two bedrooms and a common area/bathroom. Looks a lot cooler than it sounds. Paint colors: OC-22 Calm, 2131-70 Gray Sky, 2111-40 Taos Taupe, and 2132-50 Pilgrim Haze. The team from David Heide Design Studio also designed the new look for the home’s exterior.
Lower Level: Looking to create a comfortable space for teenagers to gather, the design team used a neutral color palette that matched the rest of the home and focused more on designated spaces for watching movies and gaming. Hungry? Don’t worry – they’ve included a bar area with a pizza oven. Paint colors: 984 Stone Hearth and HC-87 Ashley Gray
Designers: Heidi Dockter, Cindy Abramovitz, and Lauradeen Potretzke – Gabberts
