Friday Finds: Metallic Wallcoverings Bring Out The Glamour

Gold. Silver. Bronze. Precious metals to add glamour and drama to any home through the popularity of metallic wallcoverings. “Metallics can create a depth and a dimension that I don’t think you can achieve any other way, besides with the real deal,” says Kathy Basil, Hirshfield’s Design Resource Showroom Manager. “We’ve been seeing metallics for a couple years,” she says, “but it’s not just the high-end anymore. It’s across the board.”

Kathy loves the versatility of metallics, and not just for walls. In fact, one of her favorite applications is on a ceiling. “If you just have a tiny budget and want to transform a powder room – you can paint the walls and put a great metallic wall covering on the ceiling00,” she says. “It has to be lit right, but it would look like a whole new space.”

Metallics may be a trend, but Kathy says they are a good trend. There will be more longevity than a color trend, because the look is classic, and there are options for all styles. “It’s not just traditional, it covers modern, it covers transitional – if you like metallic, you can pretty much find any type of pattern that would have some kind of metallic enhancement.”

The dramatic effect of metallic papers can even take a professional by surprise. Kathy recently visited another designer, and couldn’t believe the look he created on his ceiling. “He put a metallic architectural pattern on his ceiling, above the living room and the dining room, and I truly thought it was a 3-dimensional textured ceiling. But it was all created with wallpaper. So it can really add a ton.”

“Where it looks really cool is in the back of built-in shelves,” Kathy says, pointing out the extra depth and texture created by metallics, particularly the wide variety of metallic grasscloths now available.
