How to Hang Art the Right Way

If you’ve decided it’s time to incorporate some new artwork into your home, you probably spent a lot of time choosing the perfect piece (or three). There are a lot of different styles to choose from when it comes to art, and there is a lot of advice out there to help you choose the right piece for your interior design. But then what?

The way you hang your art is just as important as choosing the correct piece. The most important thing to remember is that you should hang your art around 57″ on center. This puts your art at about eye level:

This is the same height that most museums use to hang their art. If you’re hanging multiple pieces in one room, this technique adds a great midline to the room:

This is also the height you want to use if you’re incorporating a picture ledge into the room:

If you picked out a lot of pieces, you can incorporate a gallery wall into your décor. You’ll still need to remember the 57″ rule, but it applies a little differently here – this time, you want to center your gallery wall at the 57″ mark. If you’re trying to brighten up a more neutral space, you can use colored frames in a coordinating palette:

But remember, you can never go wrong with a black frame and a white matte:

When creating a gallery wall, you usually want to keep 2-3″ between each piece. You can hang all of your pieces in a grid-like fashion (this works especially well when each piece is roughly the same height and width), or you can go “salon style“, as pictured above. A great tip is to lay your pieces out on the floor until you’ve figured out exactly how you want them to look – this will save you a lot of time and frustration.
