This painted floor certainly adds interest to this long narrow room. I like how they used the two different grays to soften up the hard lines of the oversized check pattern.

Nice subtle contrast of the stair runner against the white stairs – House to Home

I’m loving the scale and color of this gingham (some might call it a buffalo check). Did you notice the fabric on the wall is the same fabric used as the window treatment. This pattern had to have been a bear to hang; making certain all the rows line up so the pattern doesn’t start to get wavy. They may have had the fabric paper-backed, making it easier to hang. Long time favorite room by photographer William Waldron of Jeffrey Bilhuber’s home.

Bring in pattern through fabrics. Nothing beats a classic plaid for a crisp farmhouse look. Choose a waterfall-style skirt to give it a modern edge. 2012 Southern Living Ideas House

Plaid vs. tartan. Check vs. gingham vs. buffalo check. Whatever you choose to call these classic patterns is fine by me. Over the past six months I’ve been noticing tartans, ginghams and checks showing up more and more in the world of home furnishings and fashion. Fresh, comfy, classic, preppy, country, sassy, and sexy, (yes, gingham is sexy) all describe these wonderful checks and tartans.

From Annie Selke’s Fresh American blog here are some rules for using plaids:

  • To tone down a colorful plaid, pair it with different shades of neutrals
  • To enhance a plaid, choose one bright color from the pattern and make it the dominant color for the room
  • To create a sleek, modern contrast, go with white walls and most furniture, and use the plaid on a large piece or two (like an armchair or headboard) and on accents
  • To up the retro quotient, combine the plaid with other, smaller patterns from the same color palette

With our outstanding selection of wallpapers and fabrics, Hirshfield’s experts can help you out with your “checkered” obsession;  Hirshfield’s Design Studio also carries carpets and rugs. And if you must have that DIY gingham wall or DIY painted floor, we can assist in your color selection and finding the right paint products for your project.
