Window Treatment Wednesday: Save Money and Energy with the Right Window Treatment from Hirshfield’s

Summertime weather forecasts here in Minnesota usually include the three “H’s” – hot, hazy and humid. Sure you could crank up the AC or turn on some fans to help cool your home down, but you could also simply add a fourth “H” to that list – Hirshfield’s – and combat the summer heat (and summer energy bill) with some beautiful window treatments!

Yes, brains and beauty come together in the energy efficient window treatment offerings at Hirshfield’s. Look for window treatments with a low Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC), which is the amount of solar heat that passes through a window, where 0 = none and 1 = all. The lower a product’s SHGC, the less solar heat it transmits, which can help a home stay cooler in the warm summer months.

A customer favorite at Hirshfield’s is the Hunter Douglas Duette® Architella® Honeycomb Shade, the most energy efficient and best-selling honeycomb product Hunter Douglas carries.

The SHGC of a bare, double-glazed window is 0.76, which means 76% of solar heat is transmitted through it. Add a Duette® Architella™ 11/4″ shade with Elan™ opaque fabric and the solar heat gain coefficient drops to 0.15 — only 15% of the solar heat is transmitted.

“Uncovered windows can literally be energy holes, depleting a home of up to half of its heating and cooling energy dollars. We specifically designed and developed the award-winning, design-forward Duette® Architella® shade – our most energy-efficient product and the fastest-growing innovation…to address this problem. This takes the air-trapping cellular structure of our original Duette honeycomb shade and makes it even more energy-efficient by placing a cell within a cell.“

Hunter Douglas has increased the amount of Architella fabrics that have a neutral (beige) color to the street side. Swatches are labled with “Neutral Streetside Color Option”. This is a great alternative, as almost all cellular shades are white facing the street. Since we, at Hirshfield’s, work with color a lot, the homes exterior apperance is just as important.
