Devine Color is about color confidence. It is about delivering personal color palettes that people easily recognize, love, and want to live with.

"We are a color solution company that believes background color should create “harmony without monotony and contrast without conflict.

"I created Devine Color as my personal confirmation that wall color impacts the way we live. Backgrounds impart a visual fragrance that makes a space unique and personal. I believe that our personal affinity for certain colors gives us instant pleasure and we should give ourselves permission to live with them.

"Like colors in a great painting, perfect color does not stand alone. It is the relationship and position of colors in an environment that makes it perfect.

"This is the foundation of Devine Color Products."

"When the chemist opened up the gallon of paint he handed me a brush. I put the brush down and dunked my hand right into the paint and everyone gasped! That’s when I knew it was perfect."

from GLOOMY To GORGEOUS

When Gretchen Schauffler moved to Oregon from Puerto Rico in the 1980s, the gray days and hazy nights began to overwhelm her. Gretchen, an artist turned color consultant and entrepreneur, decided to brighten her world by comparing the colors of her new home with the bright oranges, reds and yellows of her native land.

She created 10 palettes of 115 colors found in nature to counteract the muted tones of the Pacific Northwest. The result is a line of luxury residential and commercial paints called Devine Color, Inc., that retails for about $30 a gallon. Instead of the traditional printed color chips, do-it-yourselfers get dried paint in a handmade sample book to plan their projects and can purchase a mini paint pouch to test on the wall before buying a full gallon.

Designed as “Color Therapy from the Northwest,” Gretchen describes her acrylic latex paints, manufactured by Miller Paint Company, as having the texture of “thick, rich yogurt.” She says they apply to walls like chiffon without the strong odor of most paints.

One of Gretchen’s philosophies is that there can never be enough color in the world—a theory she takes to heart every day.

that is the art of nature

Throughout time, the same six colors in the rainbow have been painted, woven, and sculpted by artists to recreate nature’s perfect relationships. I created these palettes to fit the size of walls — large colors that do not overpower the ones you live with. These are colors that need you to see them! That is the art of nature.

Devine Color® is not about being an expert. It is about a palette, philosophy, process, and products that allow you to choose color confidently. The Devine Color® Palette will enlighten you on how to design color relationships for your spaces that transform your personal color tastes into the art of living with color.

the mini pouch: my own
personal revolution

"Filling by hand the first 42,000 mini pouches ourselves, the hope was to eliminate having mistake quarts in the garage, to have something that fit in a purse instead. It was a revolutionary idea that made color testing economical and environmentally responsible. How else could I get you to feel the difference between paint that goes on like yogurt and looks like chiffon?"
